Astigmatism is a commonly occurring cause of blurred or distorted vision that is normally associated with an imperfectly shaped cornea. A person’s eye is naturally shaped like a sphere. Under normal circumstances, when light enters the eye, it refracts, or bends evenly, creating a clear view of the object. However, the eye of a person with astigmatism is shaped more like a football. For this person, when light enters the eye it is refracted more in one direction than the other, allowing only part of the object to be in focus at one time. Objects at any distance can appear blurry and wavy. Astigmatism occurs in nearly everybody to some degree. It can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses or vision correction procedures.
Here at Triangle Eye Physicians, we offer comprehensive eye exams that help diagnose Astigmatism and offer services to correct it. Common surgical procedures to Rid Astigmatism consist of LASIK and PRK. To see if you are a candidate for LASIK or PRK, please contact our refractive coordinator to schedule your complimentary exam.
If you have been diagnosed with Cataracts and you have an Astigmatism, there is an correctable option for you as well, called a Toric Lens. The Standard Cataract removal does not correct your Astigmatism, so if you have an astigmatism before cataract surgery, you will have it afterwards. This means you will likely still need to wear glasses even after your cataract is removed. If you do not wish to wear glasses after Cataract surgery, a Toric Lens may be an option for you. Toric specialty lens are inserted during the cataract procedure. They are not covered by insurance companies. Typical Toric Lenses range in price from $1500 an eye to $3000 an eye, depending on various factors . To get more information regarding Toric lense and Cataract surgery, call our office to schedule a Cataract Evaluation.
